Is it possible to use a HDTV as a COMPUTER monitor?

Is a HDTV better than, or at least comparable to, a computer monitor for use with a computer?And if so, which HDTV and computer would be the best combination?

I know about the VGA cables that microsoft provides to make the xbox connect to a monitor, but they still have those big, clunky audio cables attached. How am I supposed to listen to the audio from the XBOX 360 with those? I need one of those tiny headphone-type connectors. . . Also, I would like to be able to switch between my computer and the xbox on the same monitor and speaker setup without changing the wires every time. Is this possible?

What is the best resolution for my HDTV as a monitor?

I have a Sony Bravia which has resolutions of 720p and 1080i. What is the best way to connect to my pc? Should I use HDTV r Super VGA? If I choose 1280 x 800 it looks pin sharp but does not fill the screen ,and it is not as clear on the resolutions that do. I have checked my graphics card etc, and can only stretch the screen on certain resolutions. I want to be able to read text easily.
