Is it possible to activate a blackberry without having a data plan?

I have verizon & my phone just recently broke, but my dad has his old blackberry bold he is going to let me have. Will I be able to activate it? All im going to use it for is for call & text, no internet, I dont have a data plan. Like if I call to activate, will it hook up? I know your supposed to have a data plan, but I only want to use it for call/text.

I have Verizon, and was wondering if there is any extra fee for having a blackberry. I currently have just a regular verizon cell phone. I don’t have any extra data plans though besides texting. So if I got a Blackberry do you need to pay a data fee or something? Thanks.
